Bright Ideas: Lighting Tips for Your Home

Lighting has the power to transform any area in your home. It can make your rooms seem smaller or more spacious than they really are. Unfortunately, lighting is sometimes overlooked when it comes to home remodeling projects. The good news is you can avoid making the same mistake. Today, Handyman Connection® of Winter Park shares tips and techniques on how to properly illuminate the main rooms in your home.

Living Room

The right kind of lighting can make any living room come alive. As living rooms are typically used for family quality time and various activities such as watching television or playing board games, it’s a good idea to use cove lighting instead of recessed lighting. Valance lighting tends to bounce light off the ceiling and onto the room better than downlights.

Choose a lighting intensity that will bathe the living room in a warm, cozy glow. Keep in mind that the recommended ambient lighting for a standard living room is 1,500 to 3,000 lumens.

Kitchen

A busy area such as the kitchen requires appropriate task lighting. Apart from electrical lighting fixtures, you can also utilize natural lighting during the daytime. An example of this setup would be placing your sink near a window or vice versa. At night, you may depend on alcove lighting above the sink for illumination. In your kitchen, you should have a ceiling-mounted light fixture at the center of the room to provide ambient light. There should also be undercabinet lighting fixtures for your countertops.

Install dimmers so you can control the intensity of the lighting. Kitchens are supposed to have around 5,000 to 10,000 lumens in terms of ambient light.

Bedroom

Whether it’s the master suite or a guest room, bedrooms should always abide by this rule: rest and relaxation should reign supreme. This means no central ceiling-mounted light fixtures. Bedrooms can achieve maximum coziness levels with floor and table lamps. Wall-mounted lighting can be used for bedside reading.
