5 Questions for Planning a Functional and Beautiful Bathroom

Designing the perfect bathroom can be both exciting and tedious. Don’t rush when you think about your needs so you can devise an efficient layout. To make the process go smoothly, set a budget, hire the right contractors and take some time to look for the perfect finishes. A functional floor plan is the key to building and remodeling success. To remodel an existing bath, assess the current layout. For a new bath, think about how it would function.

Ask yourself these five major questions, and the many possible sub-questions that follow:

1. Who Will Use the Bathroom?

In many households, two adults need the bathroom for preparing to go to work, when they are in a rush. Sometimes, the homeowner may allow the occasional guest to use the bathroom. In some cases, the bathroom in question is for the specific use of a child or children who depend on an adult for help; take the space into account if that is your situation. Will you be using the tub to give your pet a shower? If so, consider your pet’s size too.

2. What Will I Use It For?

The bathroom often doubles as the place for putting on makeup. In some cases, it’s also the laundry room. Think about your need for separate areas too. For example, some homeowners want the shower room separate from the tub. You may also want to spend bathing time with someone, so make sure you have a tub that’s big enough for more than one person.

3. Where Will Things Go?

What items will you store in the bathroom, and where should you place them for easy access? Your answers will dictate how much open floor space you need, the size of the tub or shower, and the type of sink. Storage is important, so don’t make the common mistake of treating it as an afterthought, because if it is an afterthought, it will show. There are places to store your items even in a small bathroom; you just have to be more creative.

4. Have I Considered the Walls?

Keep in mind that the more walls that contain plumbing pipes, the higher the cost. Limit plumbing fixtures to one wall if you can. Avoid rerouting plumbing and electrical lines. Such changes will drive up your total expenses.

5. Next Steps

With the layout in place, begin to think about design. Collect images of bathrooms you like, and then find what matches your style. Heading to the store with a clear vision of what you want will make it easier to choose hardware and other finishes.
