4 Ways to Create Storage Space Under Your Deck

Ways to create space under your deck

Many of us don’t fully use the storage space under our decks. We may stow the occasional rake or leftover lawn fertilizer, but mostly this space is waiting to be effectively utilized. Seasonal items, outdoor toys, garden tools, and sporting equipment can all be safely stored under your deck. Read more below to learn about effective storage solutions in Winnipeg

1. Seasonal Items

It can be a hassle to figure out what to do with items that are only used in a particular season. If you store them in the garage, you might end up seeing them and moving them more often than you want to. If they go into the attic, it might become difficult to get them out, or you might forget where they are.

Summertime leisure gear such as inflatable pools, deck chairs, tiki torches, and grilling implements can all be stored safely underneath the deck. Once you ensure that the storage area is dry and that the deck will not leak from above, all of these items can be safely stored by themselves, or in plastic totes until next summer. Holiday lights, wreaths, extension cords, inflatable lawn decorations, and flower pots can also be stored here.

2. Outdoor Toys

Another challenge is where to keep outdoor toys such as children’s bicycles, scooters, plastic water guns, cornhole boards, and water tables. These do not often fit easily in garage totes, and they are usually not welcome inside the house. Most of these items can be stored upright under your deck if you have a few feet of vertical space, or they can be safely stacked and stored horizontally. Any toys that end up left in the yard, under bushes, or even in a corner space will likely get rained on throughout the autumn and winter, rendering them difficult to reuse.

3. Gardening Tools

It makes sense to keep your tools near the area where they will be used the most. Storing your garden tools under your deck ensures that they will be easy to find when you need them again. Large items such as rakes and hoes can be stored in a dry corner to avoid rust. Smaller implements such as trowels and spades can be organized in a large bucket or weatherproof trunk.

Leftover seeds from last year’s garden can also be tucked away underneath your deck. Seal any fertilizers, compost, and potting soil, then keep it in the same place as chicken wire, fencing, and trellises to be used for the next growing season.

4. Sports Items

While leather baseball gloves and inflatable balls may need to be stored indoors to protect them from the elements, most sporting equipment can survive underneath your deck. Create a safe home for tennis rackets, volleyball nets, baseball and softball bats, frisbees, camping chairs, kayaks, canoes, and any other sturdy gear that you won’t be using for a while.

You can also switch out different items based on the season. When winter comes to an end, take out your summer sports equipment from underneath the deck and replace it with snowshoes, skis, poles, goggles, sleds, and ice skates.
