Home is Always a Work in Progress – Spring Maintenance Helps Recover From Winter’s Wear and Tear

Q: What are the common problems of winter’s wear and tear on a home?

A: The conditions of winter weather such as cold, snow, ice and wind can definitely cause wear and tear on your home. It’s important to inspect your home after winter to identify any potential issues before they become serious problems.

  1. Check your home’s gutters and downspouts for leaves and debris build-up. As we enter into Spring, be sure these are clean to properly guide water away from the home and avoid trapped moisture.
  2. Consult a roofing expert to inspect your roof for wear and tear – signs of curling, buckling or cracking shingles may mean it’s time to replace the roof.
  3. Look for cracked or chipped paint on the exterior of your home. Any signs of exposed wood means these areas need repair to prevent rotting.
  4. Check for loose or cracked caulking around your doors and windows.
  5. Seal any cracks, gaps, holes that may invite water or pests as intruders in your home. Also sealing these areas may prevent air leaks.
  6. Resecure or Replace any siding, soffit or fascia that may have blown loose or off your home.
