Q: How can I revive my old, faded deck in time for Summer?

A: Spring is a perfect time to get your deck back into showcase condition for summer entertaining. It’s important to inspect your deck each spring to ensure the structure is safe as well as to perform some preventative maintenance to prolong the life of your deck.

Perform a thorough inspection of the entire structure to ensure that it is safe and secure. Check for any loose nails and screws that may need replaced or tightened. Tighten any railings that may have become loose during the winter. It’s also important to look beneath the deck to ensure that all beams and support poles are in working order. In addition, replace deck boards that are bowed, warped, rotten or broken as these are other potential safety hazards.

Make a maintenance plan to clean and re-stain or re-seal your deck to avoid water damage and mildew. Remove dirt and mildew from your deck by using a pressure washer and deck cleaner. Apply a good quality sealer or stain to protect your wood deck surfaces from the elements. Keep in mind that even if your deck is made from a composite material, a through annual cleaning is recommended by most composite manufacturers.
