Home is Always a Work in Progress – Preventing Frozen Pipes this Winter

Q: How can I prevent frozen pipes this winter?
A: By concentrating on some precautions and minor home maintenance, you can take the appropriate steps now to prevent your home’s pipes from freezing when the temperature drops:

  1. Seal any areas that allow cold air into your home – examples of these areas are holes around electrical wiring, dryer vents, and pipes. Seal air-leaking holes with caulk or insulation to block cold air from entering and warm air from escaping.
  2. Insulate pipes in your home’s attic or crawl space. Any exposed pipe is vulnerable to freezing. A secondary form of prevention is  wrapping pipes with heat tape.
  3. Be sure to disconnect water hoses and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
  4. In cold temperatures, turn the bathroom and kitchen faucets on, allowing a trickle to help prevent your pipes from freezing. Also, open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to pipes under sinks.
