Summertime brings up memories of starry nights, campfires, and time spent with family. If you do not have a fire pit in your backyard, here are tips with everything you need to know on how to build a fire pit for you and your family or friends to enjoy. No matter if you do not know where to begin, or you are looking for some tips, follow our guide to building the best fire pit for your backyard.

What you Need to Know

Before you begin building or buying supplies, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does your insurance have any stipulations or restrictions about lighting a fire on your property?
  • Does your local area have any restrictions?
  • What shape and style of fire pit would you like to build?
  • What is your budget?

Location

Where would you like to build your fire pit? It might look nice to have it on the patio near your home, but have you thought about the smoke coming in through your windows? You will need to make sure it is a distance away from any plants, shrubs, and sheds. If you have a lot of trees on your property, the area above the fire pit needs to be clear.

How to Build a Fire Pit

Spray paint the fire pit’s location and dig it out several inches. Tamp down, fill with gravel, wet the gravel with the garden hose, then tamp down again until it is level only a few inches beneath the surface.

You will want to lay your bricks first without using adhesive to make sure everything fits. Use sand to raise any bricks and a rubber mallet to tamp them down. Once the fire ring fits, use adhesive to secure all bricks.

That is how you can build a fire pit. Let the adhesive cure before using the fire pit. With this new installation, bring new life to your backyard.
