Aging in Place / June 26, 2019
Aging-in-place remodeling projects have slowly gained traction over the years. In the last quarter of 2018 alone, over 80% of remodelers said they have installed some aging-in-place amenities like anti-slip floors, curb-less shower stalls and grab bars in their customers’ homes. Homeowners are also beginning to see the value of these extra features and the increase in demand have spurred remodeling companies to offer more products and services related to this undertaking.
Our professionals at Handyman Connection® of Wichita East have explored this growing industry to find out which aging-in-place features are the most common and why customers are clamoring to have them installed.
Aging-in-Place Projects
Almost 90% of remodelers reported installing grab bars for their clientele, making this feature the most common aging-in-place project. Higher toilets and curbless showers take the next two places, unsurprising due to the fact that almost all senior-related accidents occur in the bathroom. Despite this, however, anti-slip floors and bathtub remodeling projects rank low on the list, as well as most other upgrades aimed at increasing access such as walk-in bathtubs and lowered kitchen counters and cabinets.
Why Remodel?
According to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the number one reason homeowners take on aging-in-place projects is that they are “living with older parents.” Age-related and non-age conditions and disabilities, though increasing in number compared to 2017 and 2016, are the least cited reason for a remodel. As 2018 draws to a close, however, a record 86% of homeowners have said that these projects are part of their “planning for future needs.”
