Your home unchecked can have the risk of dry rot and wood rot damaging your home. Basements, windows, and many areas of the home that are susceptible too moisture and eventual rot if not maintained or looked out for. With these tips, see how you can recognize the threats, damage, and how to repair.
Areas that can let in or build up moisture can all develop dry rot in your home. In the bathroom, areas around the sink, toilet, shower, or bathtub are susceptible. Dry rot can be checked for yearly before the winter with a flashlight and long-handled screwdriver. If any wood in your home is wet or can be punctured by the screwdriver, is swelling, or has an odor, those are signs of rot.
Before you can start repairing, all leaks will need to be fixed and sealed so the wood can dry out. Once dried, seal it with borate or copper wood preservative. Check back in to make sure no more moisture appears and that the wood sealed properly. Ways to help prevent moisture build up is putting an
exhaust fan in the bathroom, and a dehumidifier in the basement. If you have a deck, be sure to remove any standing water when it rains.
