Your Monthly Maintenance Plan for 2020

Regularly maintaining your home can save you on costly repairs and even reduce your energy bills. However, home maintenance isn’t usually included in your list of New Year’s resolutions.

Here are home improvement projects you can accomplish to keep your home in good condition through all seasons.

January

Perform a Safety Check. Test if your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working or in need of new batteries. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and that it’s working properly.

February

Paint a Room. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a room. You can hire a professional for this project to ensure that your home is painted properly. Since you may not be able to open windows during this season, choose a no-VOC paint.

March

Get an HVAC Inspection. Inspections and tune-ups will help extend the lifespan of your heating and cooling system.

April

Inspect Your Exterior. Look for any signs of winter storm damage on your exterior, such as damaged gutters, broken siding, fallen shingles, or torn flashing. You can use binoculars to help you check the high areas of your home.

May

Wash Your Exterior. Once you’re done spring cleaning indoors, it’s time to deep clean your exterior. Wash your windows and siding to make your home look brand new. Keep in mind that it’s best to leave the use of powerwasher to professionals to prevent accidental damage.

June

Ready Your Deck. Wash your deck, get rid of debris, and reseal if needed for water damage protection. Avoid accidents by checking the surface for protruding nails, loose nails, and other potential hazards.

July

Organize Your Garage.  Minimize clutter in your garage by hanging tools from pegboards and keeping small items in cabinets or on shelves.

August

Have Your Roof Inspected. Regular roof inspections can help detect problems like leaks before they affect your interior. Your roofer should look for loose or missing shingles and replace them as necessary. The areas around the eaves and gutters should also be checked for leaks and signs of water damage.

September

Declutter Your Kitchen and Bathroom. Make the holidays less stressful by organizing your kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

October

Prepare Your Fire Place. Have your fireplace professionally inspected and your chimney cleaned to make sure they’re working properly before winter comes.

November

Check Your Floors. Walk around your home to see if any rooms need new flooring before the holidays. Check for signs of wear and tear, such as movement between boards and exposed nails.

December

Get Ready for Winter. Remove screens on your windows if they have any to prevent snow from getting trapped and causing damage to the frames. Consider investing in insulation for your pipes to prevent them from freezing. Frozen pipes will restrict water flow and even burst, causing significant water. damage
