You don’t have to be an expert plumber to know that water should be inside your washing machine and not outside of it. Leaks in washing machines can be caused by a number of different factors. These factors depend on the brand and model of your washer as well as whether it’s a front- or top-loader. While the reasons may vary, a few of them can be similar across the board.
Let our experienced craftsmen at Handyman Connection® of Wichita East show you the basics of identifying leakage problems in your washing machine.
Top-Load Washers
The most common source of leaks is overloading. Make sure that your machine is not handling more than its capacity to keep the tumbler well-balanced. Turn off the drain and fill the tub with enough water so you can check how level it is. Washers that have been thrown out of balance will often show in its water levels. If the problem persists, the issue may be from the overflow tube. This tube can get clogged if you use too much or the wrong type of detergent.
Front-Load Washers
The gasket that holds the door in place is prone to accumulating dirt and debris, both from the laundry load and from outside sources. Clean the gasket thoroughly at least once every week to keep it from leaking water. Other than this, leaks at the back and under the machine can be traced back to the same reason as their top-loading counterparts. Always use the right type of detergent or reduce its amount to prevent any problems in the future.
Overflowing Problems
While overflowing washers are technically not a leak, they can still cause a lot of trouble. Unfortunately, if this is the issue, you will need to call in a professional to repair the unit as soon as possible.
