4 Tips to Help You Prevent Costly Plumbing Problems

You have a real problem in your hands if you have been calling a plumber too often for service calls or have been frequently experiencing clogs on your kitchen sink or toilet. Following these tips, however, could spell the difference between expensive repairs and an efficient plumbing system.

  1. Reduce heat loss on water supply pipes.

Wrap both hot and cold water lines in insulation whenever exterior temperatures drop. This way, you can keep their contents above the freezing point. Insulation on hot pipes helps increase heat retention in the water, so you won’t have to wait long when you turn on a faucet or shower for hot water. Insulation on cold pipes, meanwhile, stops condensation that can lead to freezing and potential ruptures.

  1. Install water hammer arrestors.

Water hammers occur when all of the water’s momentum and weight slams into a closed valve upon shutting off. It is loud, disruptive, and, if not addressed, can potentially break pipes and faucet components. Installing arrestors on pipes helps absorb the water shock that occurs whenever you close a faucet.

  1. Consider a water softener.

Hard water can damage your plumbing system. It is composed of minerals that build up over time and can reduce water flow and can cause corrosion on pipes. It also shortens the life of appliances, from dishwashers to washing machines. A water softener solves this problem. Installed on your home’s main water supply line, it removes hard water ions and replaces them with sodium ions.

  1. Throw large leftover food in the trash.

The sink disposal unit under your kitchen sink is designed to shred small chunks of food. Make sure not to leave bigger scraps on it to prevent damage. Also, keep the unit clean; if it’s full of filth, it might not function properly and may cause clogging.
