Frank Sinatra sang, “oh the weather outside is frightful. But the fire is so delightful. Let it snow…” The song is a nice reminder of the joys of winter. For seniors, those joys can easily turn into a nightmare. It’s easy to slip and fall on a snowy pathway. It can be more difficult to stay warm and safe as a senior. This year, before the snow flies, take some time to think about how home repairs for seniors can make winter safer and more comfortable.
Seniors are at a greater risk of falls, even without the added hazards of snow and ice. Winter weather simply increases the danger. Enlist the help of a neighbour to salt and shovel the driveway and sidewalks for your senior to prevent a fall when getting the mail or going to the car.
When a weather emergency occurs, your senior may need additional care. When the roads are bad, it can be difficult to get out to your loved one. Plan ahead and arrange for a family member to stay with an older member of the family or hire a caregiver for a few days. If the power goes down, there will be an additional person in the home to help out with daily chores. While you’re making arrangements for extra help, make sure to stock up on flashlights, batteries, and other supplies to prepare for a power outage. When you do know that icy conditions are forecast, make sure you check the medicine cabinet to have enough medications for a week or more.
Fires are a big hazard in the winter months when everyone is inside. Make sure your senior has a fire extinguisher available that is easy for him or her to use. Fire extinguishers can be heavy and bulky, so look for an extinguisher designed for use by seniors. These extinguishers are lighter and more compact, as well as having an easy method to discharge the fire retardant.
Heaters and fireplaces are two of the biggest culprits of carbon monoxide poisoning. Because seniors live alone, it’s more likely that they would miss the early symptoms of CO poisoning. Install a carbon monoxide detector to alert them that there is a problem. While you’re thinking about detectors, check the fire detector for its age. If it’s older than 10 years, it should be replaced before you replace the battery.
If your senior still drives, offer to get the car decked out for winter. Take the car in for a tune-up to make sure everything is in good working order. Make sure your senior keeps the gas tank full for safe driving. Pack essentials in the car, such as snacks, blankets, extra batteries and kitty litter or sand for traction if the roads get bad.
Make sure your senior can stay warm over the winter by checking the weather stripping and caulking around doors and windows. You don’t want their house losing heat, making utility bills even higher. Take care of repairs before the cold weather sets in. Clean the gutters. Make sure the handrails on the steps are in good condition. These things can help prevent injuries during cold weather.
