Quick Tips to Maintaining Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Tip #1 – Follow the manufactures instructions for maintenance of your alarm. These instructions will be found on the packaging. You can also find the instructions on line at the manufactures website.
Tip # 2- Check your smoke alarms on a monthly basis. You can perform this set test by using the test button. If all is working you should here the alarm go off. Let your family know this is coming as alarms can be very scary.
Tip # 3- For smoke alarms that require batteries change the batteries every six months. If you hear your alarm chirping this may be a sign that the batteries are low and need to be changed right away. Never disable your alarm!
Tip # 4- Some smoke detectors have batteries that are good for 10 years. When this type of unit starts to chirp the whole unit needs to be replaced as the batteries are not replaceable.
Tip # 5- Every six months gather the family and do your monthly test. This is also a good time to do a practice run on your family fire escape plan.
Tip # 6- The life span of smoke detectors is 10 years. All smoke detectors will need to be replaced at that time.
Tip # 7- The life span of carbon monoxide detectors is 5-7 years. If there’s no expiration date on the unit or it’s older than 7 years replace it now!
Tip # 8 – When cleaning around the home make sure to dust the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. You can vacuum or blow the dust out. This will help the sensors stay operational.
