Building a Backyard Fire Pit in Hanover, MA and the Surrounding Area

Everything Homeowners in Norwell, Marshfield, and Nearby Cities Need to Know to Build a Fire Pit

If you want to build a fire pit in your backyard, this is the resource for you. Learn how to build a backyard fire pit and learn some tips from our professional craftsmen along the way.

Research

Before you start building or purchasing materials, make sure there is not a local building code that you have to check with to build a fire pit. Some insurances have policy rules about having a fire on your property as well so make sure all these places are clear before you start.

Tools

  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  • Shovels
  • Tamper
  • Mallet
  • Concrete or Stone Pavers
  • Garden Hose

The materials you purchase will depend on what kind of fire pit you would like to build. If you want a ring, you will need trapezoidal blocks. If you want to build a rectangular or square fire pit, standard rectangle blocks will do. Get creative with different sizes, colors, and shapes, too!

Fire Pit Installation
  1. Choose where your fire pit will be installed.
  2. Mark the area with spray paint.
  3. Remove sod and dirt as you dig the pit seven inches in depth.
  4. Pack the dirt with a hand tamper and keep level.
  5. Fill the hole with crushed gravel for the base.
  6. Wet the gravel and use a hand tamper to create a solid layer, a few inches below the surface.
  7. Lay out the fire pit blocks, keep them level and tap down with a rubber mallet or use sand to make them even.

If your fire pit is as you would like it to be, apply construction adhesive to the blocks. If you have a fire ring, put it on to make sure it fits and then secure the blocks. Check what kind of adhesive you are using to let it cure the right number of days before you can use the firepit. With these tips and how-to instructions, you will be ready to build a fire pit in no time. Create that outdoor space you have always wanted and enjoy the results.
