An attractive ceiling trim is the final visual set piece that really brings the room together and can revitalize how your living space looks. Crown molding, in particular, goes a long way in establishing that traditional charm.
There are several to choose from, but our experts at Handyman Connection® of South Shore picked four that we recommend for your next remodel.
1. Federal Style
The simple but elegant bearing that characterizes the Federal style crown molding is great at adding volume to an otherwise low ceiling. This is an English-inspired style that has become popular after the American Revolution, so it fits traditional living spaces better. This crown molding is also ideal for storage spaces and kitchens.
2. Early American Molding
Early American crown molding is characterized by four-foot bump puts and cyma recta curves where the crown meets the ceiling. Just like the Federal style, this has simple beading for equally simple accents and can make a small kitchen appear larger and more spacious. We recommend keeping this the standard color, which is white, to enhance its space maximizing appearance. If you want to color this molding, stick to lighter and faint colors.
3. Colonial Revival Crown
This crown molding is a popular choice for modern and contemporary homes because of its crisp and clean molding. It’s attractive yet simple. In terms of design, this mixes Greek Revival and Federal profiles, and showcases the best of both. There’s a bit of variation for this molding, too; the standard double curved cyma never goes out of style, but the S-shaped crown is a viable choice as well.
4. Minimal Trim
Finally, there’s also the minimal trim, which appears barely there. It has simple beading and a rather indistinct profile, but it’s far from unattractive. This crown molding is ideal for already crowded spaces, but you want to enhance it a bit to make it more visually appealing. Bathrooms, kitchens and small rooms are the perfect places to install this crown molding.
