The kitchen sink is the space’s most hardworking fixture. There’s a lot to consider when installing a new one, such as how many times you use it or its general size.
In this post, Handyman Connection® of South Shore discusses how to pick the right kitchen sink.
Sinks Based on Installation Type
Your choice of kitchen sink might ultimately depend on how it’s installed. There are three ways they’re installed: the self-rimming or drop-in, undermount and flush mount. Self-rimming sinks, as their name suggests, are the easiest to install since you can simply drop them into a cutout on the countertop.
The undermount style of installation refers to kitchen sinks installed under the countertop, usually hanging from the underside of the structure. The flush mount style, on the other hand, is similar to the drop-in sink, except they’re “flush” with the rest of the tiled countertop. You can say that they’re prefabricated with the countertop.
Material
You need to think about the kind of material of which your sink will be made. Regardless of how it’s installed, the finish of your new hardware will affect its aesthetics and performance.
Stainless steel is the most popular since it’s affordable and low maintenance with a neutral appearance. Its minimalist aesthetics also make it a good choice for modern and contemporary kitchens.
Cast iron is another, which is usually of what most sinks are made. Like stainless steel, it’s durable and easy to clean, and has an attractive porcelain finish. Due to its weight, however, they tend to be difficult to install if you plan to affix it as an undermount sink. It can function better as a drop-in sink.
Alternatively, you can go with solid surface sinks. The name is a bit of a misnomer as the sink is basically made of the same material as your solid surface countertop. A solid surface sink is a great choice if you plan to do a flush mount type of installation, and they are typically easy to maintain, clean and repair.
