A Handy Guide to Buying Door Hardware

You may think that all door hardware is the same, but there are key differences between items like a lockset and the standard doorknob. Their key differences aren’t all function, too, as knobs, hinges and similar hardware vary in visual impact and aesthetic appeal.

In this post, Handyman Connection of South Shore discusses how to choose the right door hardware.

Door Hardware and Entry Doors

Since the entry door is one of the first things you and your guests see, the door hardware you’ll be installing on it should complement your architecture. We recommend the classic mortise lockset since it’s the most visually appealing door hardware from your choices.

Mortise locksets have a timeless appeal, and there are even contemporary designs that seamlessly fit a modern home.  Your choice of actual hardware is up to you, though. Most mortise locksets come with the standard knob, though the pull-down lever is a viable option, too.

Interior Doors

Interior doors are all about function, so locksets are excluded from your door hardware choices. What you should be picky about is the style of door hardware. You have three options: knobs, pulls or levers.

Door knobs are an obvious choice since they have a straightforward design and can fit almost any door. Elderly family members, however, may have difficulty operating them. Alternatively, you can choose a lever for the doors, especially for the bathrooms, as they are easier to operate. Pulls are usually restricted to cabinets and closet doors although they are a good choice to install on a more contemporary patio door in the living room.
