What to Look for in a New Gutter System

Your home’s gutters are more than just an auxiliary part of the roof. They also play a role in protecting it and the rest of the home from water damage and moisture intrusion. Because of how critical the gutters are in terms of protecting your home, you need to make sure you pick the right one. Handyman Connection® of South Shore discusses what to look for in a new gutter system.

Gutter System

Seamless or Sectional Gutters?

Sectional gutters, as their name suggests, are gutters sold by sections and are glued or snapped together to form the length of the gutter you need. While these are inexpensive, they are known for developing leaks as time goes by since the space between the sections grows larger as it ages.

We recommend seamless gutters instead. While they do have a higher price tag, these are custom-fit to the measurements of your roof. Because they aren’t separated by sections, leaks are less likely to occur, and they will last longer as well.

Gutter Material

Vinyl remains the least expensive choice for gutters. They have respectable durability and resilience, but can become brittle in colder climates. Additionally, they aren’t as heat-resistant as some of the higher grade materials.

Aluminum remains the “standard” material for gutter systems. It’s lightweight, inexpensive and, most importantly, rustproof. This product is also available in more colors than vinyl, making them a good choice if you want your gutters to look aesthetically pleasing, too. Other higher-grade materials include galvanized steel and copper. These two tend to be the priciest kind of gutters, but they do offer a true lifetime value.

Gutter Protection

Finally, make sure you consider the gutter protection system that you’ll be installing along with your new gutters. These protect your new system from blockages and clogs – keeping out debris and letting water flow naturally.
