Scarborough Bathroom Renovations: Should You Install A Doorless Shower?

pros & cons of doorless shower

If you’ve never heard of a doorless shower before, it may sound crazy at first. Nevertheless, it is a popular trend in bathroom renovations. It can offer multiple benefits in terms of both aesthetics and practicality. Nevertheless, there are a few drawbacks as well. This is not a service that our experienced Handyman Connection team in Scarborough offers but we understand that it’s important to consider the pros and cons of any renovation design. In this blog, we take the time to share more about whether or not a doorless shower is right for your bathroom.

Advantages of Doorless Showers

A doorless shower increases the usable square footage of your bathroom because you no longer have a tub that you need to work around. It helps the bathroom to feel more open and creates the illusion that there is more space than there actually is. If your bathroom feels outdated, a doorless shower certainly makes it feel more modern while adding a luxurious touch.

One of the biggest advantages of doorless showers is that they are more accessible to people with limited mobility. Even if this is not an issue for you now, it may become a concern in the future. If you already have the doorless shower installed, it can help you remain in your home later if aging in place is important to you. With a doorless shower that is also curbless, there is no obstacle preventing you from rolling a wheelchair or taking a walker right into the shower, if needed. Even if there is a small lip or curb to prevent the water from escaping, this can be low enough that a wheelchair can still roll over it and that it does not pose a tripping hazard. Since a glass shower door is expensive, you may save at least a little on bathroom renovations in Scarborough by leaving it off.

Disadvantages of Doorless Showers

Doorless showers are not appropriate for every bathroom. To prevent water from going everywhere, they do require a certain amount of space. If the space available is not quite adequate, you will experience some splashing resulting in water on the floor. You can mitigate this, but not prevent it completely, with a shower floor that is sloped, a drainage system that is well designed, and a showerhead that is strategically oriented.

A traditional shower enclosure traps the heat inside, keeping you warmer as you bathe. With a doorless shower, this airflow control is lost. As a result, you may find that your doorless shower is chillier than what you are used to. If you tend to run cold at baseline, this may be too much of a liability compared to other shower options.

If you want a shower that is completely curbless as well as doorless, you have to have a specialty drain installed to prevent the water from spilling all over the bathroom while remaining level with the floor. This also requires special tile work, all of which can increase the cost of installation. While you may save a little on not buying a glass shower door, the drainage system may exceed those savings.

Another big disadvantage of doorless showers is a lack of privacy, especially if you share the bathroom with someone else. Some have a tiled wall separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom. This is an effective solution, but it requires a lot of space and does not offer the advantage of openness that many people are looking for in a doorless shower. Other options are barriers of frosted glass, which let light through but still present a blockage, or clear glass, which can fog up with steam and water droplets while showering but may not obscure the view reliably. If you always close the bathroom door when showering, this may be less of an issue.
