What Is A Home Security System?

What Is A Home Security System?

A home security system is one of the best ways to protect your family and secure your property’s entry points, including doors and windows. While some security systems offer more security components and additional monitoring options, most systems are installed in the same way. Security systems can be challenging to install, and all of the wires must be connected properly. Hiring an electrician in Red Deer is a worthwhile investment to ensure your security system is installed correctly.

What Is a Security System?

A security system is a collection of electronic components that work together to protect a home or business. Systems have a central control panel to protect against robbers and other potential home intruders. Most security systems include:

  • A control panel, which serves as the main controller of a security system
  • Door sensors
  • Window sensors
  • Interior and exterior motion sensors
  • Security cameras
  • Sirens or alarms
  • A yard sign to indicate your home is being monitored

While some systems may come with more sophisticated components, most designs are made up of the basic mechanisms described above.

How Does a Security System Work?

Security systems work by securing entry points into a house with sensors that communicate with the command center or control panel. These sensors are placed on windows and doors and will sound when opened while the system is armed. Open spaces inside a space can also be protected with motion sensors or light sensors. Here are how the different components of security systems work together to protect your home:

  • Control panel: The command center or control panel is the electronic mechanism that arms and disarms the system and communicates with each component. The panel also sounds when a protected area is breached and communicates with the alarm monitoring center. Most control panels feature a touchpad that can be used to arm and disarm the system.
  • Window and door sensors: Door and window sensors are made up of two separate parts. One component is installed on the window or door, and the other is placed on the door frame or windowsill. When the entry point is closed, the two parts are joined together by an electronic wave, creating a security circuit.
  • Motion sensors: When turned on, motion sensors can protect an area by creating a zone that cannot be crossed without sounding a high decibel alarm. Motion sensors can be placed outside to protect a yard or in large homes to protect rooms that contain valuables.
  • Surveillance cameras: While traditionally wired, surveillance cameras are increasingly designed in wireless configurations. Cameras can be used to monitor distant areas of your yard, garage spaces, or entry points. Most surveillance cameras can be monitored on an electronic device such as a phone or computer. When homeowners access the platform of the alarm monitoring company, they can monitor their home and watch for deliveries or the arrival of children after school when not at home. Cameras are also helpful as they create a record of security breaches that can later be used as evidence in a court case.
  • Yard signs: While yard signs may seem like the most straightforward part of a security system, they play a crucial role in the security of your home. When you place a sticker on your window or a sign in your yard, you let burglars know that your home is professionally monitored. Most burglars are looking for the easiest target and will not attempt to enter a house with a security system.

Most systems can be customized with additional options such as light sensors.
