National Fire Prevention Week – October 8th to 14th

National Fire Prevention Week

In Canada, Fire Prevention Week is proclaimed annually by the Governor General. In the U.S , National Fire Prevention Week has been sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 1922, and is the longest-running public health observance in U.S. history. With the efforts of the NFPA and many other national, state and local agencies, the number of people who die in fires each year continues to decline.

Planning leads to prevention of deaths in fires!

In 2017, the National Fire Prevention Week held in Oct focused on Planning. Knowing that every second matters between getting out or tragically losing a life. Having 2 plans of exit would save lives.

So, it became Seconds Count: Plan 2 Ways Out!

Practice the following steps to help your family survive.

  • With the whole family, make a map of your home and clearly mark exit points.
  • Make sure each person has 2 escape routes
  • Children should be able to get out by themselves as you may not be able to help them
  • Practice the plan at least twice a year. In daylight and at night
  • To slow the spread of fire and smoke close doors behind you.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

This is a reminder for you from Handyman Connection of Red Deer. We have reliable local craftsmen that can ensure all the doors, windows and the proper numbering is done at your home.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Do you know how old your smoke alarms are? Do you remember the last time you checked them? When it comes to smoke alarms, age does matter. Check the manufacture dates on your alarms – if yours are 10 years or older, they should be replaced right away.

Wanting to upgrade to a hard-wired system or simply replacing older smoke alarms call the professionals at Handyman Connection of Red Deer.  Our qualified craftsman can help.
