Red Deer Carpentry Services: Choosing a Closet Door

Choosing a Closet Door

Closet doors are the only thing between you and the sometimes disastrous area known as a closet. While you can sometimes be messy and your life may seem out of control, your trusty closet door can be pulled shut to drown out the chaos for another time. Most closet doors come builder-grade standard with the house; they have the same pick-lock doorknob and 6-panel front that nearly every closet door has ever had. If you want to spruce up the safety panel that keeps you from thinking about Saturday chores, consider three closet door options to upgrade your space.

Bi-Fold Closet Doors

Bi-fold closet doors comprise two panels that are hinged in the middle. When opened, the two panels fold open into one another and press back against the wall. Bi-fold closet doors are helpful for people with small closet areas who also do not want to lose the floor space necessary for opening and closing a traditionally hinged door.

When the panels fold in on one another, it does create more space than an open door, but it removes any area on the backside that could be used for hooks or bars to hang additional items. The downside of bi-fold doors is the lack of options to store things like a traditionally hinged door. A carpenter in Red Deer might need to install an additional storage solution to compensate for the lost space.

Sliding Doors

Sliding doors are versatile and come in many types. They are desirable because they create additional space for walking in the adjoining area. Like bi-fold doors, sliding doors lose the back of the door space that would otherwise be purposed for extra storage. Sliding doors, however, have a wider front surface area on which people often install mirrors.

Traditional

Traditional sliding doors are on a track installed inside the wall. Sliding doors come in single, double, or multiple panels and cover larger spaces than just one closet opening. Track-drawn doors are ideal for people who want partial coverage for specific areas in their room. A mirror comprises at least one panel of the traditional sliding door panels. Conventional sliding doors are also known for coming off the track, requiring frequent repair services.

Barn

As the chic farmhouse style went wild, antique barn doors repurposed on a rustic, and sometimes rusted, metal frames were all the rage. Now sliding barn doors have been tweaked to fit every style and price range. Barn doors are sliding doors that are not built inside the wall. The sliding rail is installed above an existing doorframe after removing the traditional door. The hardware extends past the wood frame on either side or further on one side than the other. The barn door comes as either one or two panels that can slide open to reveal the closet behind it.

Pocket

A lesser-known closet door option, better-known as a half-bath door, is the pocket door. A pocket door has a track like a traditional door, but the track’s second half is built inside the wall. When the door opens, it slides into the wall and disappears. This space-saving detail is ideal for a more oversized walk-in closet since it is necessary to walk into the closet to reach all of the areas.

French Closet Doors

French closet doors are similar to traditional doors because they are hinged, have a doorknob, and open and close by the twist of the handle. French doors are typically half the size of a traditional door and split the opening space down the middle. Rather than being hinged and opening on only one side, french doors are hinged on the left side of the left door and the right side of the right food. When opened towards you, both doors pull from the middle.
