While your exterior doors need to be sturdy enough to resist weather and secure enough to withstand break-in attempts, it is a mistake to focus all your attention on them and not give your interior doors any consideration. Interior doors do not face the same potential threats that exterior doors do, but they have a role to play in soundproofing and interior design. Before you have a carpenter in Red Deer install your interior doors, give some consideration to what they should be made out of. There are multiple options available, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
A hollow core door consists of a frame made from a moulded composite or plywood. The middle of the frame is empty. Because it is not completely solid and is made from cheaper materials, a hollow core door is one of the most affordable options. It is also lighter, meaning that it is easier to open and close and may not be as likely to cause an injury if it runs into a person or slams onto a body part. On the downside, a hollow door does not provide much in the way of soundproofing, nor does it provide much insulation. It is also less durable than other types of doors and may need replacing over time.
A solid wood door is more or less what it sounds like: A door made of planks of genuine wood. Because there are several different species of trees from which solid wood doors can be made, there are several different varieties available. Maple, juniper, walnut, and cherry are all popular trees from which to make solid wood doors. Most are made from hardwoods, but softwoods such as pine are also used to make interior doors. Because of the different types of wood used, solid wood doors range in price but tend to be more expensive than other materials.
Solid wood is the most traditional choice for your interior doors. They are typically stained for protection and to enhance their natural beauty, bringing a warmer look to your home. If you have wood furniture, you can coordinate by choosing the same type of wood for your interior doors. Another advantage of solid wood doors is that they provide excellent soundproofing. However, wood shrinks and expands in response to changes in humidity and temperature. For this reason, you may not be able to install solid wood doors in every room of the house. You may need to choose another material that is better able to withstand moisture for bathroom doors, and possibly kitchen doors as well. Solid wood doors are heavier than hollow core doors.
A door made of metal and glass provide a more streamlined look that would fit right into a less traditional, more contemporary interior design scheme. Metal and glass doors are more affordable than solid wood doors but still on the higher end of the overall price scale. Apart from the aesthetics of the door itself, a major advantage of metal and glass doors is that they let more natural light into rooms that otherwise wouldn’t see as much because the light can spread from room to room. If the panels of this type of door were made of clear glass, that could cause a problem with privacy. However, the glass can be frosted, textured, or otherwise treated to make it less transparent while still allowing light to pass through. In recent years, metal and glass doors have gained popularity among homeowners.
