3 Signs Your Light Fixtures Could Use an Update

Signs your light fixtures are out of date

Old-fashioned light fixtures often work just as well as newer ones, so you may not see the point in replacing them right away. However, just because the fixtures work all right doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t consider hiring an electrician in Red Deer to have them replaced. While some light fixtures have a timeless appeal, others just come across as outdated.

Here are some of the signs that your functional but frumpy light fixtures could do with an update.

1. The Colour Is Out of Date

When we talk about the colour of the light fixture, we are talking about either the shade, the stem, or both. Depending on the fixture, you may be able to swap out the shade without replacing the entire light, and some stems can be painted a new colour, but you may want to consider if that is worth the investment of time compared to replacing the entire fixture.

Old-fashioned light fixtures tend to be darker, duller colours, such as burgundy or mauve. Sometimes they are tan with a hint of pink. This is in contrast to the colours that are more popular today, which tend to be bold and rejuvenating. If the colour of your light fixtures seems to be bringing down your mood, it may be time to update to something more cheerful and contemporary.

2. You’ve Had the Same Lights for Decades

It is very common for older homes to have their original light fixtures. People don’t necessarily see the need to replace them if they are still functioning properly. The function is important, but it is not the only thing that matters. Some fixtures are rooted in a particular time. When people see pictures of them, they laugh because the effect is comical.

There may also be a practical reason for replacing original or decades-old light fixtures. Even if the lights are still working, the wiring may not be up to code. You could be putting yourself at risk for a fire hazard if you do not have the wiring replaced, and as long as you are replacing the wiring, you may as well replace the fixture at the same time.

3. The Lights Don’t Match the Overall Design of the Home

It isn’t always a bad thing to have light fixtures that look old-fashioned or traditional. If the overall design of your home is old-fashioned or traditional, it may be perfectly appropriate to retain the original fixtures.

However, if most of your interior design scheme is modern and your fixtures are old-fashioned, they are going to stand out, and not in a good way. The same holds true if your design scheme is modelled after a particular era, and your light fixtures seem to come from a different one altogether. To create a cohesive design scheme, all the various elements should come from roughly the same era. They don’t all have to be from the same year, but at the very least, they should be from the same decade.

Your light fixtures should also match your overall design aesthetic. For example, a very ornate fixture in a room full of simple decorations and furnishings is going to look out of place. The same holds true for a lavishly decorated room with only a simple light fixture. Not only should all the design elements be from the same decade, or at least look as though they do, but they should be of a similar style.
