When it comes to kitchen backsplash trends, few things have had a longer moment in the sun than subway tile.  And, it seems, that moment is not exactly ending any time soon.  But, while we love the look of subway tile, and love using it in many applications in homes, subway tile is not the only kitchen backsplash option.  Though tradition has often dictated matching materials, when it comes to backsplash, there is no requirement to match backsplash material to countertop material.  And, though white-on-white-on-white has been “all the rage” in kitchens, many are now opting for bolder colors and more eye-catching or unique looks.

As mentioned, the “white” kitchen look is timeless and not going anywhere, but some are opting for less of a muted color palette, in favor of something more unique and personalized to their decor preferences.  Forbes discusses what backsplash color palettes are hot right now, “Good news if you’re already thinking about switching up your color scheme: Kitchen colors are changing, according to interior designer Jane Lockhart. Though white motifs will still dominate, everything from cabinets to backsplashes will be done in less saturated tones. “Charcoal, grays and even neutral pastels like pale blue, pale green gray and tinted whites are the new alternative to the standard white,” she says. She also foresees kitchens sporting lighter wood tones, including walnuts, whitewashed woods and white oak in rift grain.”

Speaking of bold, geometric and graphic patterns are also in right now.  There are many stunning tile patterns available at every price point and by implementing a geometric or graphic pattern you infuse your own personal style into your home while enhancing decor and adding visual interest.  There are big bold patterns and tiny patterns that each add their own charm and look.  Geometric and graphic patterns often look best when offset by a minimalist kitchen or, very traditional and sleek design.  If there is too much going on it will look like a competition for attention but when used appropriately, geometric or graphic patterns look interesting and beautiful and uniquely enhance their surroundings.

Another interesting backsplash option that has recently gained popularity is stainless steel.  At first, you may envision large sheets of stainless steel attached to the wall, and while this can look great,   there is far more stainless steel options than that. There are stainless steel metal tiles in a variety of shapes and styles to accommodate any taste.  Further, the surface of the stainless steel comes in a variety of finishes to provide a very unique look.  In addition to it looking interesting, stainless steel is very easy to clean which is appealing in a kitchen, particularly around the stove.  When investing in a kitchen remodel, or adding backsplash to a kitchen, it is important to consider your personal style, your cabinetry and countertops, and what will ultimately be the wisest investment in your home so that you can choose the perfect backsplash to enhance your kitchen.
