5 Ways to Maximize a Small Bathroom

When you have a small space for a bathroom, or an existing small bathroom, the key to maximizing space is proper configuration and organization.

When you have a small space for a bathroom, or an existing small bathroom, the key to maximizing space is proper configuration and organization.  If you are renovating a small bathroom, now is your chance to take advantage of the space you do have and use it to its best ability so that you can have any features you want or need in the bathroom.  Often, when you see a small bathroom or space for a bathroom you think the only option is a powder room with a small toilet and vanity with sink.  While this is occasionally true, more often than not, there are more options than you think.  Below are 5 ways to maximize space and get the most functionality out of your small bathroom.

1. Opt for Smaller Fixtures

  • Today, there are a variety of bathroom fixtures that have been specially designed for small spaces.  They are smaller in scale to accommodate a tight space but still very much functional.  In fact, because of the size of the room, you may not even realize the fixtures are any smaller but you will enjoy the additional space.  No matter your needs, there is a smaller fixture – toilets, sinks, baths, showers, etc.  In a smaller bathroom a sink and counter with a smaller depth will take up less space, and a pedestal sink will provide even more room.

2. Strategically Place Fixtures

  • In addition to choosing smaller fixtures, you can opt to have them installed in unique ways to optimize space.  Buck convention and install the toilet in a different direction to open up a walkway, choose a corner sink or shower to save space or choose wall storage instead of under the sink storage.  By changing up convenient and getting a little creative you would be amazed how much space you will realize you have.

3. Glass

  • Hard wall of stucco or tile look great but can close a small space off.  Instead, choose a frameless glass shower door to make a space feel more expansive and open.

4. Work With Height

  • For storage of less-used items opt to add storage on the wall as high up as you can go.  This can be done with open shelving or closed cabinetry and will not only add storage to your home but free up space on the floor in your bathroom.

5. Paint In Light Colors

  • Have your small bathroom painted in a light color or light color palette and accentuate with light-colored tiles as well.  Dark colors can make a small room with minimal natural lighting feel cave-like so by painting in light colors it will help the room feel more airy and bright.
