Slash Utility Bills With These Home Energy Efficiency Improvements

The monthly utility bill shows up and it is almost as if you can hear a collective groan of everyone opening their bill and seeing just how much their utilities are costing them.

The monthly utility bill shows up and it is almost as if you can hear a collective groan of everyone opening their bill and seeing just how much their utilities are costing them.  It seems like, no matter what, utility bills just keep going up and up.  But, while we cannot control the cost that utility companies charge to use their services, we can do things to improve our home’s efficiency so that we do not rely so heavily on costly utilities.  There are home energy efficiency improvements for just about any budget so it is something that is achievable for any household but, there are certain improvements that will make a much bigger impact on the bottom line than others.  This is one of those instances where if you spend a little, you have the potential to save a lot in the long run and, as an added bonus, your home will likely be more comfortable in which to live.  Below are a variety of home energy efficiency improvements that can help reduce your monthly utility bills.  Speak to a qualified handyman or contractor to determine what improvements are within your budget and to begin making energy efficiency improvements to your home.

  • Replace Windows
    • Do you have single-pane windows? If so, you could save a lot of money by replacing them for new energy efficient dual-pane windows.  This is one of the pricier options but it can make a significant difference.  Energy Star describes the potential savings by replacing single-pane windows, “$126–$465 a year when replacing single-pane window.”  Replacing windows is no easy feat, consult a handyman or contractor to ensure the work is done properly so that you can truly save on utilities.
  • Seal the Gaps
    • The gaps around your windows, doors and other openings may be tiny, maybe even invisible to the eye, but if they are there they are a major energy-suck. If you are uncertain if your home has leaks, the easiest way to find leaks is to take a lit candle or a lighter and move the flame (safely, close but without touching) around the seams, if you see a flicker of the flame that is because air is moving in and out.  All of that expensive air conditioning is being slow (or quickly!) leaked out and all that outside air is making its way in, necessitating increased use of your utilities to keep cool or warm.  A qualified handyman or contractor can help you properly seal gaps to improve efficiency.
  • Replace Thermostats
    • Do you have old thermostats in your home that cannot be programmed for energy efficiency? The most basic programmable thermostats start in a very budget friendly price range (around $20!) and offers basic programming features so that you are not wasteful with your utilities.  Other models offer sophisticated features that learn your habits, provide the ability to control thermostat remotely from smart devices and even have the ability to offer safety alerts should temperatures become too cold or hot.  Replacing your thermostats is something best left to the professionals because it requires electrical work so hire a professional handyman or contractor to assist you when installing your new thermostats.
