How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets

The kitchen always seems to be the place everyone wants to spend time.  No matter what the occasion, people simply always end up congregating in the kitchen.  The cabinets you choose to put in your kitchen are an extension of the design aesthetic in the home.  Kitchen cabinetry makes a big statement about yoru personal style and really sets the tone not only for the kitchen, but often, for the house.   If you are designing your new home or renovating  your existing home, choosing kitchen cabinets is a big task.  While the decision can be overwhelming because it is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home, it does not have to be overwhelming.  While it may be tempting to go with a trendy kitchen cabinet, it is best to stick with a classic look in whatever design style you prefer so that it stands the test of time.  There are a wonderful selection of kitchen cabinets for any price range and any design aesthetic.  Carefully sort through your options within your budget and narrow them down based on your personal taste, then choose what will work best in your new home.  Below are things to consider when choosing  a kitchen cabinet.

  • Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are a beautiful option that allow you to completely customize the design of your kitchen and what will look best for the space.  They are, however, the more expensive option over stock cabinets.  You can choose every feature that you can dream of so that you can have your dream kitchen.  You will also get the added benefit of having a cabinet designer help you make decisions and guide your choices.

  • Solid Wood & Plywood Cabinets

There are many different types of wood you can choose to achieve different looks such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, birch and pine.  The cost of the wood will depend on the quality and durability and ranges depending on the type of wood you choose.

  • Thermofoil & Laminate

Thermofoil and laminate cabinets are less expensive because they are made from synthetic materials.  They are very durable options that can stand the test of time. SFGate describes what thermofoil is made of, “Thermofoil cabinets are similar to laminate, with a vinyl coating placed over a manufactured or pressed wood base. The thermofoil manufactured today is much more durable than the type that was popular in the 1980s, but there are still some trade-offs when compared to natural wood.”  Additionally, HGTV describes laminate kitchen cabinetry, “Laminate is a synthetic material placed on particleboard, which is made of compressed wood. It comes in high-pressure and low-pressure varieties. High-pressure laminate is the higher quality of the two and is sold under brand names such as Formica and Pionite. Laminate doors are made by applying the synthetic material on top of particleboard or MDF. Because of the way laminate doors are made, the seams of the underlying particle board (which is brown) may show, which is often considered a drawback to using laminate. Low-pressure laminate, such melamine, is used on the less-expensive kitchen cabinets and is not as durable as the high-pressure variety. It also comes in fewer colors, so it is less appealing among homeowners looking for a wide variety of color options.”

  • Stainless Steel

If you are looking to design a more modern or industrial kitchen, you may opt for stainless steel.  It is sleek and stylish but can be a pricey option.  HGTV describes stainless steel cabinets, “Historically used in restaurants, laboratories and for medical storage, stainless steel cabinetry has moved beyond its industrial beginnings and is now found in high-end home kitchen designs.  While you can get a very sleek, angular look with stainless steel kitchen cabinets, it does show fingerprints and scratches easily so you want to make sure you are comfortable with a non-perfect surface if your kitchen is used frequently. Fortunately, over-the-counter stainless steel cleaners are readily available so that fingerprints can be easily wiped away.”

  • Door Style

Choosing door style will be one of the biggest decisions you make when choosing kitchen cabinets because they are the first thing you will see.  The cabinet face sets the tone for the room and will determine the style of the kitchen.  The more intricate the design style of the door, typically, the more expensive.  Shaker, flat, inset?  The type of face you choose for your cabinet will make your cabinet look more traditional, contemporary or modern.
