3 Simple Ways to Prevent Hair From Clogging Your Drains

Hair care is obviously important. People want to look good, and having a full head of shiny hair can help with that. Unfortunately, hair can also get into a lot of places, with the drains being the most common. Clumps of hair on the drains are not only unsightly, but can also affect your plumbing in the worst way. To prevent hair-clogged drains from ever happening, check out these tips:

1. Cover your head when bathing or showering. Preventing hair-clogged drains starts with you. Before taking a bath, brush any excess hair from your head. If you’re taking a shower, but don’t plan on washing your hair at that time, you should consider wearing a shower cap. It keeps your hairdo intact, and your drains won’t be filled with stray hairs: a definite win-win. If you don’t like wearing a shower cap, pulling your hair back in a bun, ponytail or braid should also work.

2. Have drain covers installed. You can catch any loose hairs and stop them from ending up inside the pipes by getting drain covers. They’re available in most hardware or home improvement stores. Place one in every shower or tub in your home. Some screens are even designed to be installed underneath the drains to better trap hair.

3. Flush your drains. You’ll have to gather the troops for this. The first thing you need to do is close all shower, tub and sink drains. Then, fill each tub or sink with warm water. Make sure you have one family member standing next to each drain and toilet in your home. At your signal, everyone should open their drains and flush the toilets at the same time. Doing so flushes all drains at once, removing any hair clumps from your plumbing.

If these tips don’t work and your drains are still clogged with hair, you’ll need to call a trusted plumbing expert like Handyman Connection® of Orange County.
