How to Clean Your Deck Without a Pressure Washer

A deck is a great addition to your backyard or patio. It provides additional living space that you can use for lounging under the sun, weekend family barbecues and even social gatherings with friends. But like every part of your home, it has to be cleaned and maintained regularly. This can be done easily with a pressure washer, but if you don’t have one, how can you clean it?

Why Your Deck Should Be Regularly Cleaned

Cleaning your deck is a great way to ensure it looks tidy and remains in good condition. It’s constantly exposed to the weather elements, after all, and it can even get damaged if neglected for too long. If you don’t regularly clean your deck, it won’t just collect dirt and debris. It will also accumulate dry rot, which can lead to cracks and other damage that can compromise its structural integrity. By keeping it clean, you can keep the wood free of dirt and stains while also preventing mold and mildew from developing and causing damage. This also helps extend its expected lifespan, which means you get to enjoy it for longer!

Cleaning Your Deck

Even if you have a pressure or power washer, it’s not always recommended for use when cleaning your deck. This is because the constant pressure on the surface can slowly damage the wood, so make sure to keep it at a low pressure to prevent unwanted damage over time. If you don’t have a pressure washer, however, the following are some other alternatives:

  • Use trisodium phosphate (TSP). Mix 125 milliliters of it with around seven liters of water to create a cleaning solution for your deck. You can also add some oxygen bleach to eliminate mold and mildew growth on your deck. Make sure to use a broom when cleaning, and wash it off with cold water until all the TSP residue is gone. If it sits for too long, it can permanently stain the wood on your deck.
  • Try a general wood cleaner. This can only be effective if your deck isn’t that dirty. Get a bucket filled with around four liters of water, and add about one cup of laundry detergent. Once the water-detergent solution is ready, apply it to the surface of your deck, and clean it using a broom. Use a garden hose to effectively remove the solution off the surface.

While it’s possible to clean the deck yourself, it can often be tedious and time-consuming. If this is the case, consider hiring a professional to do the job instead!
