3 Areas in Your Home You Should NOT Caulk

There are plenty of reasons to like caulk. Its versatility makes it useful for a number of household tasks, whether it involves plugging gaps and cracks on windows, preparing areas for painting or preventing leaks in the bathtub. But there are some areas in your home you should never caulk because it’s either unnecessary or potentially harmful.

1. Moving Parts

Caulking around doors and window frames offer a simple and effective way to prevent air leakage and significant energy loss. Just make sure, however, that you don’t use it to seal gaps near any movable areas, such as the hinges and sliding tracks. Otherwise, you’ll be risking stuck, jammed and inoperable doors and windows.

2. Drainage Spots

You can use caulk to plug up leaks and seal openings – just as long as these openings aren’t being used for drainage. Take the trim boards atop the siding, for example. They work to direct the flow of water away from the siding, helping keep your home exterior dry and intact. You’ll be doing more harm than good by caulking the trim boards. The same goes for the bottom of the siding. If water somehow finds its way behind the siding, the openings at the base of the boards ensure that it has a way to escape. By caulking this area, you’ll be leaving water trapped between the siding and your interior walls, which may result in mold and rot.

3. Junctures

Make sure you don’t caulk the junctures where certain types of siding connect with each other. This is especially important in cedar shake or shingle siding, which has a tendency to contract and expand when exposed to changes in weather and temperature. Splits and cracks may occur on the siding boards if you do caulk these junctions.
