Can Ceiling Fans Really Help You Save Energy?

If there is one thing most homeowners want, that would be lower heating and cooling costs. There is a popular belief that a ceiling fan can contribute to a reduction in your utility bills. However, in certain parts of the country, this equipment doesn’t provide sufficient cooling to take the place of air conditioning.

Continue reading to learn if ceilings fans can really help reduce your monthly energy bills.

What Ceiling Fans Really Do

Instead of cooling the air, what a ceiling fan does is cool your skin. Air conditioners, however, bring cool air inside your home and warm air outside, maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. In other words, the AC lowers the room’s temperature, while a ceiling fan blows air on you.

Will They Cut Down Your Energy Cost?

You can only benefit from a ceiling fan if you are in the room where it is running. If you keep it on while you’re not physically present, then you’re just wasting electricity. It also won’t contribute to the performance of an inefficient HVAC system. Turning your ceiling fan on will not help AC perform better; the only thing it will do is lead to higher energy costs.

Fortunately, there are ways to actually use your ceiling fan to save on your utility bills. You can raise your thermostat by at least five degrees. Doing so will cause your AC to run less and consume less energy, lowering your cooling cost. Another thing you can do is to only turn on your fan when you are in the room and turn it back off when you leave.
