How Uneven Flooring Can Affect Your New Kitchen Countertop

Adding a countertop to your kitchen can improve its functionality. However, before your new countertop can be installed, you need to make sure the base cabinets and the kitchen floor are both level.

Why is uneven kitchen flooring a problem if you want to install a kitchen countertop?

Poor Countertop Alignment

The pieces of your countertop won’t align properly at the seams if the base cabinets or the kitchen floor is uneven. Incorrect alignment creates gaps where dust and mold can accumulate. Not to mention an improperly aligned countertop (which is often used as a design focal point) can disrupt your kitchen design.

Important note: uneven kitchen flooring has implications for your kitchen’s entire design, not just its kitchen countertop. For instance, uneven flooring will be noticeable when you install new wallpaper. That’s why if you notice even a slight slope in your flooring, it’s highly recommended that you have a general contractor inspect your kitchen.

Possible Suspects Behind Uneven Base Cabinets

What are the usual suspects behind uneven base cabinets? If the contractor you hired didn’t undergo stringent vetting, it’s possible that the cabinets weren’t installed properly. However, the usual culprit is wear and tear over the course of the cabinet’s lifespan. That’s why before installing a new countertop or cabinets, it would be a good idea to schedule a general inspection of your home.

How to Level an Uneven Cabinet Base and Kitchen Flooring

Sloped kitchen flooring may need to be strengthened and leveled. However, if this isn’t an option, your contractor may use shims (tapered pieces of wood used to fill in gaps) to level the cabinet base or the top of the cabinets if you want to avoid repositioning them.
