Proper maintenance is crucial to the longevity of your cedar deck. Cedar is a tough and durable material, but without regular upkeep, your cedar deck might deteriorate prematurely. You might also find yourself spending more on repairs that could have been avoided by being proactive about maintenance. Here are some tips on how to care for your cedar deck:
Clean your deck as frequently as necessary or one to three times a week. This will prevent plant debris and dirt from accumulating, and it also allows you to check for moist areas. Dirt and moisture are a bad combination because they tend to attract insects and hasten the deterioration of your deck material.
Washing your deck is ideally done one to two times a year, preferably in the spring and prior to staining. If you are using your deck for outdoor cooking and backyard BBQs, your deck is likely exposed to countless grease and food spills, which can settle into the grain of your deck if left unwashed for a long time.
You only need to sand your cedar deck every three years or more, usually prior to staining. Use medium grit sanding on the deck surface or opt for heavier grit if you are removing paint. If you are DIYing, be careful when doing this task. Sanding basically removes actual wood, so make sure that you’re not overdoing it to the point of damaging the material.
You can have your cedar deck stained once a year, ideally in late summer. Before applying the stain, make sure that the deck has been dry for at least 24 hours. Choose the type of stain that works best for your needs. Oil-based stains usually last longer, while water-based stains are considered more eco-friendly. Whichever type of stain you choose, make sure that you are getting a high-quality product. Don’t forget to follow the manufacturer instructions too.
