Fixing the Annoying Squeaks You Hear Around Your Home

Your home is made up of a multitude of pipes, materials, wires and other components, all of which can make annoying squeaking or creaking sounds from time to time. While this is normal, some sounds may indicate a problem. In today’s post, Handyman Connection® of Orange County will explain what annoying squeaks mean and how to fix them.

Squeaky Ceiling Fan

Even a small amount of extra weight can affect a ceiling fan’s balance and cause the motor to squeak. The first thing you need to do is to check the top of the blades for dust. Clean them if necessary. Next, you need to test the light bulbs and check if they are screwed in tightly.

You also need to check if the globe’s mounting screws are secure. Check each fan blade by trying to wiggle it. Tighten the mounting screws of loose blades. If this doesn’t fix it, then your fan blades might be out of balance. Use a fan-balancing kit to fix this. Finally, if the squeak still persists then it means that the fan’s motor bearings are worn out. You’ll need to replace your ceiling fan.

Noisy Floors

Squeaky floors are usually caused by floorboards that rub against the shaft of a nail or against each other. You can eliminate the friction by applying talcum powder into the joints between noisy floorboards. You can also use Teflon lubricant for this. Another thing you can do is drive pairs of finish nails into the floor at angles. If you have finished wood floors, then you need to fill the resulting hole with a colored wax pencil.

Squeaky Doors

Squeaky doors are usually caused by dry or corroded hinge pins. You’ll just have to apply some joint lubricant to the top of the hinge pin and let it drop down to cover the hinge completely. Remove any excess lubricant with a paper towel. Open and close the door a couple of times to allow the oil to coat throughout the pin.
