Cooking Oil: The Proper Methods of Disposal

Most people are aware that you should never dump your excess cooking oil down the drain when you’re finished cooking. Even the smallest amount of oil in the drain can build up over the years and cause problems for your plumbing as well as the city sewer system. Dumping cooking oil down your drain can cause it to become clogged with fat and can eventually cause your drain pipes to back up. With that in mind, it’s best to find suitable alternatives to disposing of your cooking oil.

In this post, Handyman Connection of Orange County® discusses the proper disposal methods for your excess cooking oil.

Bottle It and Throw It Away

Pour excess oil into a container and throw it away. You can use coffee cans, large jars, plastic milk cartons or even bottles to do this so long as the container you choose has a lid. Once that’s done, you can now throw it in the dumpster.

Oil Recycling

An eco-friendly alternative is recycling your oil. Some recycling plants will take your used cooking oil and convert it into biofuels. To find out if your area has a recycling plant that does this, you can call your local center or municipal offices. Some will even take the oil off your hands and take it to the plant themselves. This method may also require you to dump the oil in a communal vat, so make sure it’s in liquid form when you take it there.

Reuse It

One thing that some homeowners tend to ignore with used cooking oils is that they can reuse it for future cooking. In fact, oils used in deep-frying should always be reused. However, keep in mind that you can only reuse frying oil for a certain number of times.
