Signs Your Deck Needs a Complete Replacement

Decks are wonderful during warm summer days, whether for entertaining guests or simply relaxing by yourself with a good book. However, if your deck is old and worn down, it might be time to replace it.

In this post, Handyman Connection® of Orange County shares signs that your deck needs to be replaced.

Erosion

One way to see if your deck needs replacing is by checking the posts. Most decks sit on posts that are usually set into concrete or anchored deep into the ground. As time goes by, water around the deck’s base can wear away at the earth surrounding it and when left to advance, this can destabilize the deck and make it wobble or snap the posts. Should this occur, your deck might collapse.

Deck Surface Damage

Localized damage to your deck’s surface can usually be remedied by replacing some of the boards. However, if the damage can be seen across most of the surface, then your deck has to be replaced. Such damage includes wood rot, water intrusion, mold or cracks and splintering.

Gaps

You can also check the ledger boards’ condition. These boards keep your deck attached to your home, and, once they’re damaged, the weight and gravity can cause the deck to lean away from the building. This is a major safety hazard as one person tripping on the gap can cause the structure to collapse.

Rotten Posts

The posts hold the deck up so it’s important that they are well-maintained. Once you spot rotten deck posts, stop using the deck immediately and replace your deck as this is a grave hazard.

How to Breathe New Life Into an Old Deck

While replacing your deck is a viable option for solving most of these problems, it’s also possible that your deck doesn’t need to be replaced. You can determine this by checking your deck’s structural integrity. If the deck’s structural integrity is still sound, then any problems can likely be solved by a simple repair with the help of professionals.
