4 Easy, Money-Saving Bathroom and Plumbing Upgrades

Remodeling projects that involve indoor plumbing present an opportunity for money-saving upgrades. In today’s post, Handyman Connection of Orange County shares bathroom and kitchen upgrades that can save you money over time.

  1. Modern Faucets — Modern faucets release water at a slower rate than older ones. If your faucets were manufactured before 1998, they may still be pumping out water at up to seven gallons per minute (gpm). Modern faucets, on the other hand, conform to the current standard of 2.2 gpm. Replacement faucets come in standard sizes which makes them easy to replace, whether as part of a remodeling project or as a standalone replacement. Alternatively, consider touchless faucets. While the faucets and accompanying electronics cost more, they help minimize water loss from constantly running faucets.

  1. New Shower Heads — Almost a third of an average household’s water consumption is spent on showers. Fortunately, new shower heads can help you save on your water costs. Shower heads can be easily replaced within a few hours, even more quickly if done by a professional. In addition to the water savings, new shower heads can also help you save on your energy consumption since you’ll be consuming less hot water.

  1. Low-Flow Toilets — Low-flow toilets can result in further savings, thanks to more precise flushing mechanisms. Whereas old, lever-operated toilets flush at a single rate, low flow toilets feature push buttons that flush water at different flush rates depending on the need. Sink-and-toilet combinations are primarily designed as space-savers, but also let you save even more water by routing the water from the sink into the toilet tank.

  1. Upgrade Hoses and Pipes — Many people overlook the importance of replacing protruding hoses and pipes. Replacing old, worn-out plumbing components—even if they haven’t yet sprung a leak—can prevent water loss from leaking pipes. It also gives you peace of mind that you’re far less likely to encounter such leaks in the future.
