Space-Saving Tips to Maximize Storage

Storage space can become a precious resource, especially if you have limited space in your rooms. To help you out, Handyman Connection of Orange County shares some space-saving tips to maximize room storage.

Declutter

Managing storage space is a lot easier if you remove the things you don’t need. There are many ways to approach decluttering, but all have the same objective: reducing clutter. You’ll find it’s easier to manage storage efficiently when you have fewer unnecessary items taking up space in your home.

Store Items Under Your Bed

Your bed takes up a significant amount of square footage, which means if you’re not using the space under your bed for storage, you’re not maximizing your room’s floor space. A storage bed is good for storing bedroom items that you don’t use often, such as spare linens and blankets. Alternatively, buy clear, plastic containers and use them to store items under the bed.

Choose Double-Duty Furniture

In addition to storage beds, many types of furniture can also double as storage. Instead of chairs, choose bench seats or ottomans. A wall-mounted floating drawer can replace a shelf. There are certain types of headboards and nightstands that can pull double-duty as storage.

Maximize Vertical Space

There are many ways to use vertical space in any given room. Here are some examples:

  • Floor-to-Ceiling Bookshelf — This is probably the most familiar example. While primarily designed for books, you can store anything in it.

  • Hanging Pegs — Hang pegs at the back of your closet for shoe storage.

  • Pegboards — Pegboards are typically seen in workshops and tool sheds, but can be made into sleek vertical storage spaces.

Keep Storage Space in Mind When Planning Home Improvements

If you’re planning on remodeling part of your home, always include storage as a factor. For example, the bottom part of bay windows can be turned into window seats similar to bench seats.
