How to Install an Automatic Timer on Your Sprinkler System

Automatic sprinkler timers make lawn care more convenient and efficient than ever before. Now you can check watering your lawn off your checklist every day while you’re still in bed. In addition, a timer can even help save you a lot of money on your water bill.

Installing a timer on your sprinkler may sound complicated, but it’s actually pretty easy. All you’ll need are basic tools such as a flathead or a Phillips screwdriver, a wrench, a drill and the timer box itself. You may also need PVC cutters.

Installing the Timer

  • Find a suitable place where you can set down the timer box. The device stays outdoors so you want a place where it will have some protection from the elements. Alternatively, you can also choose a place where an additional protective covering can easily be installed, although some timers come with a housing unit of their own. Typically, you want the timer as close to the sprinkler system pump as possible.

  • If your home’s water main is on, turn it off first. Your sprinkler pump will have several control valves that turn specific sprinklers on and off. The sprinkler timer device will have corresponding modules that connect to these valves individually. The connections are standard-sized and are often just screwed in place.

  • Finish all connections between the timer device and the sprinkler valves. Replace the housing unit if your timer comes with one. Otherwise, cover the device so it has some protection from the weather.

  • Plug the power to the device and set the timer.

A Note on Watering Your Lawn

Some areas may have regulations indicating the days and times that you’re allowed to water your lawn. Check your town policies first and then set the timers to comply with the law.

Now, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the day as your lawn waters itself automatically. For all your home upgrade needs, give Handyman Connection® of Orange County a call today at (714) 494-1117 and get a free quote.
