Why Now Is a Great Time for a Home Office

While some people have had the option to work from home a bit in their careers, many were asked to do just that earlier this year. While working from home has many benefits such as saving on gas, food, and being in the comfort of your own house — it can also pose challenges.

For some, the challenge begins just by trying to figure out where to put a home office in. While this may have been something you put off out of time’s sake, now may be a great time to put in the home office while many are spending more time working from home.

Home Office Tips for Productivity

The idea of finally getting a dedicated space for your work may be exciting in its own right — but there are a few things you should try to consider before moving desks from one room to the next or purchasing new equipment.

Whether you are revamping a current space or starting fresh, here are some tips to get you started.

1. Invest in Equipment

No, you don’t need top-of-the-line equipment, but if your employer is not providing you with anything or is providing your main machine, you may need to invest in a decent monitor, keyboard, mouse, and even a printer.

Try to choose options that will help decrease clutter, and assist with things that cannot be unavoided such as eye strain or back pain. A decent chair can go a long way, and a monitor with different settings to ease your eye strain may help you be more productive during the day.

2. Separate Work and Living Area

When working from home it’s important to establish clear boundaries of when you’re unavailable due to work hours and when you’re free. One of the easiest ways to do this is to set up your home office away from any distractions in the house.

Try setting up your office in a basement if available, or in a room that has little foot traffic. This way you can help separate your office from your home, and not feel like you are attached to the office in any way.

3. Lighting and Decorations

You want to be comfortable in your space, and that includes making sure the lighting and decorations match your style. If your eyes are sensitive to overly bright lights, opt for ambient lighting instead.

To make the office space your own, decorate it with things that are not too distracting, but provide you a sense of calmness and joy. These types of decorations can include plants, pictures of loved ones, and shades of paint that promote a sense of tranquility.

4. Stay Organized

The best tip of all is to stay organized! Cup holders, wire management, and wall organizers are a way to keep your space decluttered. Try a hanging wall calendar or dry erase board to keep important dates and memos at arm’s length.
