Protecting Drywall From Furniture Damage With These Tips

Protecting drywall from furniture damage

Drywall has a lot of advantages. It is affordable and easy for drywall services in Mississauga to install. It is versatile enough to go almost anywhere, including walls and ceilings.

However, while drywall can be of benefit, it also has disadvantages. Though fairly durable, it is susceptible to damage from the furniture. Most often, this results in some scuffs. These are relatively minor and mostly cosmetic but can be time-consuming to correct. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent scuffs from happening in the first place.

Use Carpeting or Rugs Underneath Furniture

The pile of a carpet or rug refers to the fibres that stick up. The fibres can be short or long and can vary in density. The denser and longer the fibres are, the more friction they can create when you pull or drag a piece of furniture, such as a chair, across it. Friction slows down the velocity of the furniture and makes it less likely that it will make contact with the wall when it is not supposed to. This helps to prevent scuffs on the wall.

You may not want to cover your floor with wall-to-wall carpeting. Maybe you have a hardwood or tile floor and do not want to cover it up completely. An area rug can actually help to enhance the appearance of your floor. Depending on the materials used for the rug, you may have to put a non-slip mat underneath to keep it from sliding across the floor. The rug should be effective at preventing furniture from going where you do not want it to go if each piece rests entirely on the rug. This may not always be possible, e.g., if there are chairs placed around a dining table, but at the very least, you should try to keep the front legs on the rug as much as possible.

2. Cover up Your Chairs

Scuffs on drywall from chairs usually occur for one of two reasons. Either the friction between the two surfaces rubs off some of the paint, and possibly tears the paper covering underneath, or the finish from the chair rubs off on the wall. Putting slipcovers over your dining chairs helps to prevent both types of scuffs. The soft surface produces less friction if the chair comes in contact with the wall, and the cover also forms a barrier to prevent the transfer of the chair’s finish. Slipcovers should match the overall interior design scheme or at least the decor of the room where they spend the most time.

3. Add Bumpers To Your Chairs

Not everyone likes the way that slipcovers look. They can seem outdated, especially if they do not match your decor. If you would like to protect your drywall while preserving the original appearance of your chairs as much as possible, you can add bumpers to the back. Furniture bumpers are made of rubber, felt, plastic, or silicone. Regardless of the material, each bumper consists of a small disk with adhesive on the back so that it can be permanently attached to a piece of furniture. You can place furniture bumpers wherever you need to. They are unobtrusive and provide a cushion between the furniture and the wall in case of accidental contact without changing the look of the furniture. Furniture bumpers come in several different colours so as to blend in with different types of wood, or they may be clear to allow the colour of the wood to show through.
