If a door in your home is squeaking, letting in drafts, or is looking a little dingy, it might be time for a repair. Our handymen want to share our favorite home repair tips about when to fix your doors. These repairs can be completed on your own or, save yourself the hassle and hire a handyman to do the work.
Whether you want your home to be more efficient, or you are making repairs with the intention of selling your home, there are many reasons to repair your doors as needed.
The most obvious cry for repair is a squeaky door. Old hinges or old wooden doors that swell in the heat of summertime can cause squeaks. Simply oiling the hinges can save you a peace of mind if it is the hinges squeaking.
Door locks and handles can stick, jam, or stop working completely. No matter the reason, they can be unscrewed, removed, and replaced as time goes on to make sure your door can open and close easily. If your door is difficult to open, it isn’t uncommon for doors to warp with age or if they are damaged or exposed to moisture. In this case, it is recommended to replace the door.
If your door is letting in a draft, purchasing a simple weatherstrip can fix the problem. Test this by laying a piece of paper on the ground and opening your door above it. If the paper is undisturbed, the gap is big enough for a draft.
If you are looking for a fresh look instead of a home repair, you can remove your door from its hinges, take it down and give it a fresh coat of paint to spruce it up for spring cleaning or if you are cleaning for an open house. Removing the door from its doorway will allow you to paint all sides of it cleanly.
No matter the reason for a repair, it is important to complete a home repair when needed to maintain the upkeep of your home. If you need help, your local handymen are ready to complete your projects.
