Simple and Effective Ways to Remove Paint From Metal

Spray painting a metal item is an excellent way to give it a makeover. However, at some point you might want to change the color or let the finish of the material shine through. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to this problem. Read on as Handyman Connection of McKinney discusses simple ways to remove spray paint from metal.

Remove Paint From Metal

  • Chemical Paint Remover: Many hardware stores offer liquid, spray or paste paint removers. They’re an effective way to remove paint, but you need to make the right preparations ahead of time. First, make sure to work in a well-ventilated area and wear long sleeves, pants, safety glasses, rubber gloves and a respirator. Follow the directions and apply the paint stripper to the metal. Wait for the paint to bubble, scrape it off and repeat as needed.
  • Baking Soda Mixture: This is a good method for when you accidentally spray-paint hardware and other small metal items. First, you need a pot that you don’t use for cooking anymore. Fill this pot halfway with water and add enough baking soda to cover the bottom. Place your hardware into the pot, bring the water to a boil, and then wait for 30 minutes. Once you extract the item from the water, you should easily be able to peel off the paint.
  • Slow Cooker: This is another good method as long as the item can fit into the slow cooker. Put all the metal items into the slow cooker, fill it with water and add two tablespoons of liquid laundry detergent. Turn on the slow cooker, put it on low and leave it overnight. The next day, remove the items and brush off the paint. Do note, however, that you need to work quickly because the paint hardens fast once you remove the items from the slow cooker.

After changing the look of your metal items, why not try other home improvement projects? Handyman Connection of McKinney can help you with a wide range of home-maintenance tasks.
