Everything You Need to Know About Building a Backyard Fire Pit

fire pit

Create the perfect family getaway in your own backyard and build a fire pit. Enjoy summer evenings or find some warmth in the colder months with this addition to your yard. If you are building a fire pit on your own or are hiring professional craftspeople to do it for you, here are our favorite tips on the topic.

How to Build a Fire Pit

Before you begin to build a fire pit, gather the tools you will need: mallet, tape measure, spray paint, level, concrete or stone pavers, shovels, tamper, sand, adhesive, and a garden hose. As a side note, if you want to construct a rectangular fire pit, purchase rectangular or square bricks. If you want to construct a fire ring shape, purchase trapezoidal blocks.

  1. Check local policies and building codes for restrictions on constructing firepits.
  2. Check with your insurance on rules about having fires on your property.
  3. Spray paint the location of the fire pit.
  4. Remove sod and dirt up to seven inches deep.
  5. Tamp dirt until level.
  6. Fill hole with crushed gravel up to a few inches below the surface.
  7. Use a hose to wet the gravel and then tamp down until even.
  8. Lay out fire pit blocks, making sure they are level with a rubber mallet or fill with sand to level.
  9. Once the bricks are set out, make sure your fire ring fits the layout.
  10. Apply adhesive to the bricks once they are planned out.

In ten steps you can have the fire pit you have always wanted. Take your time and gather the supplies you need first before you begin. With these tips, your backyard will be improved with this addition in no time.
