How to Use a Caulk Gun

Tips for Using a Caulk Gun to Help with Home Maintenance Projects for Your McKinney Area Home

There are a lot of jobs around the house that need caulk guns, but they can be hard to use. Here, we’ll show you how to use caulk guns so that you can easily seal your home with them.

Using a caulk gun the wrong way can make your caulking jobs look bad and not be done. When you buy caulk, many brands come in tubes and tips that are made for a caulk gun. Is it any surprise that your job isn’t done right if you use the wrong tube for the tip or feed it into your gun wrong? These steps will help you make sure that every job you do with caulk is correct and clean.

  1. Load the Tube Correctly. It should be easy to put the tube into your caulk gun. If your kit comes with instructions, read them carefully. The most common mistake is to put the tube in upside down. This will make air bubbles in the tube, and you won’t be able to get a smooth flow of latex out of the tube.
  2. Insert the Tip Correctly. When you put the tip in, it should be in the back of the gun and have a little room to move. This is how it should be. You might be inserting it the wrong way or too far into the gun if some of the tip comes out.
  3. Feed It In. A steady stream of caulk is much easier to remove than one that spills all over the place. With your finger, you’re going to push your caulk all over your work surface if you keep doing it (not as messy as a mess of old caulk, but still messy).
  4. Work a Clean Up. A piece of old cloth, like an old T-shirt, can be used to scoop up any extra caulk that is still in the tube and put it back in the tube.
