What Is the Shaker Kitchen?

The Shaker kitchen design originated from a religious group known as the Shakers, who emigrated from England to America in the late 18th century. The Shakers were keen craftspeople, and primarily had handcrafted materials, which were known for the quality of workmanship.

They also believed in the use of “honest” manufactured goods, and considered veneers and applied ornamentation as “deceitful.” Thus, a typical Shaker kitchen would have simple, durable and functional components, all made by hand.

Designing a Shaker Kitchen

The first thing you should keep in mind about Shaker kitchens is the handcrafted look. Elaborate designs, ornamentation and moulding is unnecessary, which makes it an ideal project for DIYers:

• Kitchen Cabinets — The kitchen cabinets are the visual center of the kitchen, and therefore help define the kitchen’s design. You can achieve an authentic Shaker look without building entirely new cabinets, but rather by simply replacing the doors. The handles should have wooden handles or pulls, or perhaps handcrafted vintage metal ones if you can find some.

• Kitchen Island — You need an equally rustic kitchen island to match the cabinetry. A typical Shaker kitchen doesn’t have anything bolted down, as the idea is to be able to adapt the space to your needs. A wood top with matching wooden high chairs is suitable for achieving the Shaker look.

• Modern Appliances — Just because you are going for a rustic look doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy modern conveniences. For example, there are many types of refrigerators that are compatible with outer panels installed on them. Oven doors may take some work, as you should still be able to see through the glass. The material should likewise be able to withstand the heat coming from the oven door. You can work with a handyman if you’re not confident handling such materials.
