Seeing your baby crawl or start walking for the first time is always a happy sight, but their curiosity can put them at risk. Your house can be far from a safe space, after all. In this post, Handyman Connection of Matthews discusses the things you should prioritize in your babyproofing checklist.
Secure the Electric Outlets
You’ll notice that in your baby’s first year, they’ll start to grab whatever they can see and touch. It’s charming, but you’d rather not see them putting their hands in an electrical outlet. The simplest way to eliminate this danger is by plugging the electrical outlet with a plastic safety plug. You can also hide the electric outlets using a hide-a-cord device or simply covering it with furniture.
Safeguard the Stairs
You won’t always be able to keep an eye on your toddler once they start venturing around the house, and the last thing you want is for them to make their way to the staircase. We recommend securing the staircases with a baby gate. Make sure the gate or grille your purchase is taller than your toddler, though. The fireplace is another area where you can install a baby gate.
Non-Slip Carpets
The floors can get real slippery, and since your curious tot is still practicing balancing themselves, you’ll want to make sure your floor is as secure as it can be. The best way to do this is by placing non-slip carpets around your baby’s play area.
Lock Up the Dangerous Items
It’s surprising how toddlers can manage to open up cabinets with their little hands. The last thing you want though is for them opening the cabinet where you store dangerous cleaning chemicals. That’s why we recommend locking these up. Alternatively, you can also move these items to a shelf or cabinet that’s physically out of their reach.
