Organizing Your Closet with 3 Simple Steps

Handyman Connection of Matthews understands how difficult it can be to organize a closet. Where do you even start? As experts, we recommend that regardless of the type of closet you are planning, the first thing you should do is to consider what you will be storing and where you are storing it. Looking at the items you have can help you understand just what kind of storage you need. Here are three simple steps to help you.

Closet

Organize Items Into Categories

You can segregate your items by placing them in labeled containers or small piles so you can easily keep track of each group. We suggest starting with three basic labels: “keep”, “toss”, and “donate”. You can also categorize them into types like clothes, shoes, linens, etc. and then divide them into smaller subcategories. Find a system that works best for you and do it until everything is under a category. Be sure to group small items such as batteries or toy soldiers in jars so they won’t get lost among the piles of boxes you have.

Remove Unwanted Items

Once everything is categorized, it’s time to go through each one and decide which ones you would discard. You can ask yourself some questions such as “Have I worn this at all in the last year?” or “Does this even fit?” If the answer to most questions is a no, then you can either donate the items, sell them, or take them to a local consignment store. Why let them take up space in your closet when they can be of use to someone else? If you are uncomfortable selling your used goods, you can hold a swap meet with people who want to clear their homes of clutter. Who knows, you might just find that sweater you’ve been looking for from someone who’s too small for it.

Clean Your Closet

Lastly, you shouldn’t forget to clean your closet as well. Storing items in a poor container will only damage them. Be sure to wipe down the walls and vacuum the closet floor. After removing your items, it’s likely that you’ll find various debris such as store receipts, tags, or dust bunnies. Get rid of these as well.

If your closet seems to be in poor shape or is unfit to store your belongings, turn to Handyman Connection of Matthews. We can provide you with new shelving systems and storage spaces for your items. Call us today at (704) 246-4545 to learn more about our different home improvement services.
